Get out your calendars and get ready to start marking important dates because it’s time for another issue of FRIDAY NIGHT FACTS!
In this issue of Friday Night Facts [Volume 11, Issue 13], any AIHTI members that is interested in attending the Semler Lecture on Leadership may count this training towards their service hours. The training lecture will be held at Clowes Auditorium at the Indianapolis Central Library. I recommend that all AIHTI members consider taking advantage of this free lecture! *Refer to the Friday Night Facts issue for event time and contact details.
Two other opportunities AIHTI members have to earn training hours towards their service are as follows:
April 8, 2011 – “Minority Disparities in U.S. Health Care” at Ballantine Hall, Room 148 on IU campus – 3pm to 5pm
April 10, 2011 – Latino Health Fair at the St. Paul Catholic Newman Center, located off east 17th street – 1:30pm to 3pm
Also mentioned in this issue of Friday Night Facts is a save-the-date reminder about the 2011 Indianapolis AmeriCorps Week Celebration Event that will take place on May 20, 2011 from 9am to 3pm (EST) at the YMCA Fishers Branch – 9012 E. 126th Street Fishers, IN 46038. This will be the 3rd Indianapolis hosted AmeriCorps Week event and we look forward to seeing all AmeriCorps members, alumns and friends to AmeriCorps there! Special thanks to Amanda Moore and Erin Reuland from the YMCA for hosting this year’s event!

In other news, National Volunteer Week is April 10th through 16th. This is a perfect time to learn more about volunteering in your communities. Anyone that is interested in finding out more about volunteering in the AIHTI community, the Bloomington Volunteer Network is a great source for information about where individual volunteer energy is needed the most! Listen up AIHTI members! Anyone interested in helping with the 2011 Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana’s Sports Program Gala may count the time spent helping towards their service hours. The Gala will be held on April 16, 2011 from 5:30pm to 11pm (EST) at the Murat Egyptian Room at Old National Centre, located Downtown Indianapolis. Go to http://bit.ly/dUnThz for further information.

To help start promoting AIHTI AmeriCorps Week projects and events, be sure to join the Bloomington Meetup group for the Let’s Move Campaign!
Go to http://www.letsmove.gov/join.php, then click on the blue box that says “Join a Let’s Move Meetup in your area”, and then select Bloomington as your city/community of interest. PACES is already an event for Bloomington, so all you have to do is join. There is already an Indianapolis group so all the garden build project has to do is register the occasion as a Let’s Move event.

AmeriCorps Alums Bloomington and the IU School of Public Environmental Affairs’ (SPEA) Service Corps collaborated to host a panel discussion on Tuesday, April 5, 2011 in the Kelley School of Business on the Indiana University Bloomington campus. The panel discussion was titled “AmeriCorps in Your Community: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow.” The panel featured 4 spectacular individuals: SPEA faculty member Leslie Lenkowsky, former CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS); Erin Cooperman, visiting research associate at the School of HPER as well as the Program Coordinator for AmeriCorps Improving Health Throughout Indiana (AIHTI); Debbie Pidgeon, the Director of Programs at the Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives (OFBCI); and Bruce Murray, a current AmeriCorps member serving as the ReStore Volunteer Recruiter through the Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County. The panelists discussed national service, the role of AmeriCorps in national service, and what AmeriCorps can offer communities and the future of the program. The panel discussion was a complete success. Special thanks to Leslie Lenkowsky, Erin Cooperman, Debbie Pidgeon, and Bruce Murray for volunteering their time to be featured on the panel.
